A Soldier’s Hymn

By: Jaime Gabrielle Pojol; Artwork by Jod Gulle

I write down the words to say the truths I see
The injustice that our people faced
Our dignity taken each day for another’s whim
The nights filled with uncertainty

Our enemies didn’t give us the same courtesy
Kindness was our double-edged blade
It hid the intention and shade
We can only look up to the sky

With an open hand to reach our deliverance
History made through bloodshed and lies
But in the end, we stood up high and proud
To reclaim the land and let the lost be found

War has shaped us and paved the way to our freedom
Now we wave our flag to show our independence
