APC JOINS AMCHAM PHILIPPINES’ FIGHT AGAINST COUNTERFEITING

On April 12, 2018, Asia Pacific College (APC) in cooperation with the American Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines, Inc. (AMCHAM) held "Joining the Fight Against Counterfeiting" at the APC auditorium.

After being welcomed by no less than the Executive Director for Institutional Services, Ms. Josephine de la Cuesta, the event was formally opened by the Executive Director of AMCHAM Philippines, Inc., Mr. Ebb Hinchcliffe. Gracing the affair with his Keynote Address is the Deputy Director General Teodoro C. Pascua of the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHIL). In his speech, Director Pascua was able to establish a clear message of how the fight against counterfeiting must be taken seriously especially by the millennials of today.

A great line-up of speakers were also invited to share and impart different topics of concern on counterfeiting:

Atty. Divina Ilas-Panganiban, Co-Chairperson, IPR Committee, AMCHAM Philippines and a Partner, Quisumbing Torres talked about Intellectual Property 101 and INTA UNREAL Campaign. She has undoubtedly made it known to everyone present, how conscious we all should and be more vigilant against what is UNREAL. In her talk, she covered several examples and made the audience participate by identifying what is real and what is unreal when it comes to simple products like shoes, earphones and the like.

Other brand presentations were also discussed by the following resource speakers: Atty. Bienvenido A. Marquez, Partner and Head, Intellectual Property Practice Group of Quisumbing Torres; Mr. John Sacriz, Managing Director of IP2 Manila; and Atty. Regina Reyes-Rara, Managing Partner, MarksPro Philippines.

Wrapping up the affair was a Panel Discussion and Open Forum moderated by Atty. Princess Lou Managuelod Ascalon, Co-Chairperson, IPR Committee, AMCHAM Philippines, Government and Regulatory Affairs Executive, IBM Philippines. This gave the student attendees of APC, the opportunity to ask pertinent questions on counterfeiting.

Overall, the event on intellectual property rights has indeed enlightened a lot of people. It has raised the level of awareness of APC students / consumers, not only with the fight against counterfeiting, but also on how to determine what is real versus unreal among the different products they purchase on a daily basis.
